South Africa’s mineral industry contributes significantly to the national economy. Supported largely by gold, diamond, coal and platinum group metals production, the mining sector has certainly contributed to an extensive infrastructure, as well as many of South Africa’s secondary industries. Mining takes the lead as the country’s largest industry in the primary economic sector, followed by agriculture, manufacturing, electricity and building and construction. More recently, sectors such as tourism, information and communication and financial services have shown significant growth.

The South African mineral industry supplies a range of minerals and mineral products – 2005 saw mineral commodities being exported to over 100 countries; around 55 different minerals were produced from over 1 000 mines and quarries.

As such, a career in the mining industry is certainly appealing and there are many opportunities open to successful, hardworking candidates. There are many options with regard to a career in mining – from mining manager to mine designer or consulting engineer. Mining engineers are generally well remunerated and most mining companies offer attractive fringe benefits.
