Since the MHSC summit in 2003 with the formulation of the milestones, substantial work had been done to achieve improvement in safety and health in the mining industry. The adoption teams are the latest initiative to reach our objectives.

The Task Force decided that the way forward should be based on implementation of the Adoption System that had been presented at the industry summit. The system was designed to shift industry from sharing technology and best practice to their widespread adoption across industry.

The system recognizes that facilitating the adoption of technology and best practice is however a multi-facetted challenge. Accordingly, it involves an integrated set of policies and processes to accommodate the differing situations and requirements that arise, and the establishment of Adoption Teams, and a Secretariat to identify and manage the work that needs to be done. Importantly, the teams need to involve industry persons to ensure the relevance of their work, and the necessary industry buy-in for a successful outcome. Equally, the Task Force and the Secretariat need to ensure that enabling key elements of the integrated Adoption System are put in place to enhance the effectiveness of the Adoption Teams.
