Tom holds a MBL degree, a degree in Mining Engineering, through the University of Johannesburg, and has a wealth of experience in the gold and platinum mining sectors, including mining at ultra deep levels, project planning for new operations and the recommissioning of a dormant mine. Tom has published a number of technical papers and is a Fellow of SAIMM. In 2002, Tom received both the AMMSA gold medal and Wits Technikon alumni award and blazer. He is currently General Manager of Khuseleka Mine Anglo Platinum, in his tenor the Mine has vastly improved its safety record, significantly improved its operating efficiencies’, and is busy completing a major capital project, to extend the mines life to 2027. Most recently he has chaired the NW RTN Tripartite forum, as well as launched the first Hard Rock Safety Day, in combined effort with AMMSA , SAIMM, NUM, UASA, Solidarity, and the DMR.
Frik’s career spans two decades in the mining industry, and includes the commissioning of many successful projects and interventions on both the operational and human resources fronts. A well qualified and greatly experienced metalliferous mining diplomate and general manager, Frik is also a member of ECSA, SAIMM and AMMSA.
Dawie has been in the mining industry since 1976 and has extensive experience in the operation and management of gold, chrome and platinum mines. Dawie represents the Association of Mine Managers of South Africa (AMMSA) on the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) Council, and has been an examiner for the Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency since 2002. Currently General Manager: Mining Operations at Impala Platinum Mines, Dawie’s management style is “Participative” through a “Team Concept”.
Phillip holds a BSc degree in Mining Engineering and is currently Vice President and Head of Operations Beatrix Gold Mine. He has co-written a paper on hydropowered longhole rig for developing rockpasses and other excavations. Phillip is a member of AMMSA and ECSA.
Frik’s career spans two decades in the mining industry, and includes the commissioning of many successful projects and interventions on both the operational and human resources fronts. A well qualified and greatly experienced metalliferous mining diplomate and general manager, Frik is also a member of ECSA, SAIMM and AMMSA.
Steven completed the Anglo American Learner Official Scheme before embarking on his career in the mining sector. With a National Higher Diploma in Metalifferous Mining and a qualification in leadership development, Steven progressed through the ranks to Section Manager. An AMMSA member, Steven is currently Mine Manager of Harmony’s Virginia operations.
Jacques has been in the mining industry since 1990 when he began working for Implats. Since then he has gained considerable operational management experience, holding positions such as Section Manager, Project Manager and Mine Manager. In 2004 Jacques was appointed Mine Manager at Aquarius Platinum’s Everest mine, and in 2008 became General Manager of Everest.
Martin holds both the MDP and MBA qualifications from Unisa, as well as his mine manager’s certificate. Currently Production Manager at Anglo Platinum, Martin’s career includes management experience gained at AngloGold, JCI and the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine. Martin has published technical papers and is a member of SAIMM, AMMSA and ECSA.
Mark has held managerial positions within the mining industry for almost 20 years, beginning as a Section Manager for AngloGold in 1989 and later becoming Mines Technical Servicer Manager for Anglo Platinum between 2003 and 2007. He is currently Programme Manager for a variety of critical technical projects at RPM Rustenburg Section.
Mark is a Professional Certificate Engineer and Qualified through the Engineering Council of South Africa. He is currently working towards a Graduate Diploma in Engineering through Wits University.
Anton has been in the mining industry since 1973 and has extensive experience in the management of opencast and medium to deep level gold mines. He has further experience of commissioning large projects, health and safety management, and the recommissioning of dormant mines such as the President Steyn mines in the Free State. Anton is currently the General Manager of Harmony Phakisa mine and has played a major role in the installation and operation of the Rail Veyor - the world’s first underground horizontal bulk material transport system which operates between Phakisa and Nyala shafts.
Chris has over 20 years’ experience in the gold and platinum mining sectors. He started his career as a Learner Official at Randfontein Estates, and has held a number of management positions. He is currently Senior Mine Manager at Impala Platinum and is a member of AMMSA and ECSA.
Grant holds a National Higher Diploma in Metalliferous Mining, and has completed the Business Leadership Development Programme from Wits. Grant started his mining career at JCI’s Randfontein Estates in 1989. He has since then gained extensive operational management experience in underground and surface mining operations, including positions such as Mine Manager at Lindum Reefs, Kalgold, Doornkop and Cooke 3. Currently, General Manager of Harmony’s Randfontein Cooke operations, Grant is a member of AMMSA.
Luke started his career in mining in Zimbabwe in 1985, after which he rose through the ranks at both gold and platinum mines, including a three-year period as an independent mining consultant. A highlight of his career was the establishment of the Mineral Resource Management department at Rustenburg Platinum Mines in the early 1990s. He is currently General Manager: projects at Impala Platinum’s Rustenburg operations and is a member of AMMSA and SAIMM.
With over three decades experience in the gold and platinum mining sectors, both locally and abroad, Piet has held a number of positions, from Mine Overseer to General Manager. He is currently Production Manager at Anglo Platinum’s Rustenburg Platinum Mines and is a member of AMMSA and ECSA.
With over 30 years’ experience in the mining industry, Ben’s career started at Buffelsfontein Gold Mine, and has seen him rise up the ranks from Mine Overseer to Senior Operations Manager. He has held a number of management positions spanning the scope of mining. He is a member of AMMSA and is married with four children.
Andy qualified with an MSc (Eng) from Wits before embarking on a career in the mining industry. He worked as Operations Director responsible for the Grootvlei, Cons Modder and Nigel gold mines before joining Gold Fields’ Kloof operation to project manage the new KEA shaft extension. Andy is a member of AMMSA and ECSA.
Micheal’s career in the mining industry spans over 30 years, and he has held a number of positions during this time, including Production Manager, General Manager and Senior Manager. He has studied as far afield as France and Colorado, USA. Currently Vice President of Lonmin’s Limpopo Operations, Mike is a member of AMMSA.
